Last week Emma Stone and Seth MacFarlane announced the Oscar nominations and as per usual there were quite a few Oscar snubs. Ben Afleck (Argo), Quentin Tarrantino (Django Unchained) and Katherine Bigelow(Zero Dark Thirty) were snubbed in the best director category. Leonardo Di Caprio (Django Unchained) was snubbed in the best actor category and Skyfall failed to be the only Bond movie to garner an Oscar nod much to the chagrin of Dame Judi Dench.
This year Oscar also snubbed all seemingly modern costume designs and only gave nods to the period and fantasy pieces. Those nominated include Jacqueline Durran for Anna Karenina, Julie Weiss for Hitchcock, Paco Delgado for Les Miserables, Joanna Johnston for Lincoln, Colleen Atwood for Snow White and the Huntsman and the late Eiko Ishioka for Mirror, Mirror. I have seen all the films nominated but Lincoln and Hitchcock. and none of them impressed me as much as Anna Karenina. You see, Anna Karenina is unlike any of the other movies nominated. First of all as an old and popular book, the audience has a rather clear idea of what they expect to see the characters wear. Furthermore it has been adapted into film about 13 times. The costume designer had to exceed the significant achievements of the 13 costume designers that came before her while appearing original and modern. I'll leave you with some screen grabs from the movie.
